Ingrown nails
● Overview
An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail edge grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, and swelling.
A curved toenail refers to excessive inward curvature of the nail plate, often leading to similar discomfort.
Common causes include nail trimming habits (deep cutting), tight shoes, trauma, walking patterns, aging, and dryness of the nail.

● Treatment Approach
① Infection Control
If redness, pus, or inflammation is present, topical or oral antibiotics are used to control infection first.
Once the infection subsides, corrective or definitive treatment for the nail shape is performed.
② VHO Wire Correction Method
At our clinic, we use the VHO (Orthonyxia) method, a wire-based correction system developed in Germany.
A special wire is attached to the nail surface to gently lift and reshape the nail, reducing pain and pressure.
• No anesthesia required; walking is possible immediately after treatment.
• Aesthetically discreet and effective in preventing recurrence.
• Nail trimming or partial removal is not required, minimizing risk of deformity.
③ Severe Ingrown Cases
When the nail deeply penetrates the skin and inflammation is severe, partial nail removal under local anesthesia may be necessary.
This relieves pain and infection quickly, followed by corrective treatment if required to prevent recurrence.
